Alternative Careers in Law: The Legal Operations Graduate Training Programme

Not all law students want to become a lawyer and many students who have studied a different degree discipline are interested in working within the law. Traditionally the only role available as part of a formal graduate scheme was to become a trainee solicitor by completing a Training Contract. Now there are alternative routes into the legal sector, and different career options once you get there. One of these routes is via the Legal Operations Graduate Training Programme.

What’s the difference between the Legal Operations Graduate Training Programme and a Training Contract?

The key difference is that when you complete the Legal Operations Graduate Training Programme, you don’t qualify as a solicitor, instead you become a Legal Operations professional.

However, there are a number of similarities between a Training Contract and our Legal Operations Graduate Training Programme. For example, both take 2 years to complete and during that time you rotate around a minimum of 4 departments at the firm. There is also the opportunity to go on a client secondment in both.

While our trainees rotate around different legal practice areas such as Corporate, Financing, Real Estate or Disputes and Investigations, on our Legal Operations Graduate Training Programme you complete rotations in Business Services departments like Legal Project Management, Knowledge and Innovation and Business Intelligence and Pricing.

What can I expect from the programme?

If you are accepted onto our Legal Operations Training Programme you will work with many different talented team members across our legal operations teams who shape the way in which our lawyers service our clients. Our training programme will ensure that you develop the broad skillset needed to succeed in a legal operations role at the highest level.

Our legal operations teams are involved in a wide range of projects. Use of legal tech, for example, has become an integral part of the way we work with our clients, and you could be selecting, piloting or evaluating innovative new tools as part of your role. You will gain experience in legal process design and business improvement projects, and learn the key skills underpinning these disciplines.

Every working day is different in our legal operations teams, such is the variety of work and the range of stakeholders. One moment you could find yourself working with a few of our lawyers on a competition dispute, whilst the next might see you collaborating with the wider team, as well as professionals from other Business Services teams and even directly with clients themselves. You will gain insight into the firm’s innovation, knowledge and data strategies, our innovative approach to pricing and the analysis we use to manage the business. The work is fast-paced and varied as the industry continues to change.

How do I apply?

If you would like to apply for the programme you will need to fill in an application form on our careers site before 6th March 2022.

Once we receive your application it will be screened and then shortlisted applicants will be asked to complete a series of short skills tests assessing your Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel abilities. If you are successful at this stage you will then be invited to a half day assessment centre.
